For two years the China-EV-export story was written in Brussels. This year a different chapter opened in São Paulo. According to Chinese industry data, Brazil became China's single largest NEV export destination in 2026 - 337,000 units in the first eight months, up 159% year on year, with September pure-EV registrations jumping 172%.
The driver is local commitment, not just demand. BYD is expanding its Camaçari plant from 300,000 to 600,000 units a year; it is already sold out, with monthly demand of roughly 30,000 against 25,000 of capacity. The company has taken 50,000-unit orders each from Mexico and Argentina, to be supplied from Brazil from 2027. Geely and Renault are building joint local production; Leapmotor runs a battery plant inside its Spanish factory.
But the window for pure import arbitrage is closing. Brazil is raising the CKD assembly tariff to 35% by 2027 - the same rate as full CBU import - precisely to force deeper local content. The playbook that won 2024-2026 (ship and sell) stops working the moment local-content rules bite.
For buyers and distributors, the read is concrete. Brazil is the volume engine of Chinese EV exports, but the margin now lives in who has a local plant. Partner with a brand that has committed Brazilian capacity, or you will be exposed to a tariff step-up you cannot pass through to the customer.
Is your 2027 Brazil sourcing plan anchored to a brand with real local production - or to a price that disappears in 2027?
