September 2026 set another overseas-sales record for Chinese EVs. The headline number is useful - but the composition behind it is the part that should change how you source.
The old story was pure EV leading and everything else trailing. That broke this quarter. Plug-in hybrids posted their fastest overseas growth yet, precisely in markets with weak charging infrastructure - Latin America, parts of Africa, much of Southeast Asia. Buyers there want electrification without range anxiety, and PHEVs deliver it under lighter tax treatment.
Record volume was not concentrated in one region. Southeast Asia held its lead, the Gulf deepened, Latin America and Africa scaled fast, and Europe held via local plants despite tariffs. A 60-plus-market footprint is no longer a slogan - it is the sales base.
First, stop sourcing pure-EV-only. For charge-poor markets, add a PHEV to the shortlist; it often clears the same certification path and sells where a BEV will not. Second, treat the widened destination mix as inventory guidance - the regions growing fastest are where your next container should point.
A record is a lagging indicator. The leading signal is the mix: more PHEVs, more regions, more local plants. Importers who read the mix will be stocked for the next record, not surprised by it.
